Traveling to Mexico with Two Australian Shepherds – Vet Visits
About a month ago, I wrote an article about heartworm prevention in dogs. This was not out of the blue – it was because we were planning for a trip to Mexico and the new dog regulations require a veterinary sign-off on the treatment/prevention of both ecto and endo parasites. We recently returned and I am working on writing up our adventures. In the meantime, below is a description of how we prepared for our trip.
Heartworm Prevention in Australian Shepherds – My Experience
When we rescued Trooper from the kennel I worked at, we decided to follow our vet’s recommendation for endo and ecto parasite prevention – Advantix for fleas and ticks and Heartgard for heartworms and other internal parasites.
Making it up Radio Tower Road
Awhile back, someone told us about abandoned gold mines and huge quartz crystals near Radio Tower Road, in Pinos Altos. Having only our Honda Fit at the time, we parked at the bottom, where it met Highway 15, and walked in really far.
Our New Dog Adventure Vehicle
Why we have been Looking for a New Car: Our 2008 Honda Fit is pretty awesome. Not only does it have the nice looking sport package, but it gets awesome gas mileage. On our latest trip to Reserve, where most of the road is 65 miles per hour, we got 38 mpg.
Leaving Dogs in the Car during the Summer
I want to share our recent experience about leaving dogs in the car. I hope that if anybody else is as oblivious as we were, you can learn from our experience and avoid the stress of living it yourself.
A Few More Aussie Shaving Tips
As I mentioned in Recognizing and Avoiding Heat Exhaustion in Dogs, I recently commenced the next round of shaving the dogs. Our most recent full shave down was in March, when the weather started warming up (we are in the southwest corner of New Mexico). Now that we are in the pre-monsoon weeks, the weather is hot, humid and uncomfortable. And to top it off, our hiking locations that contain water are down to just one.
Recognizing and Avoiding Heat Exhaustion in Dogs
I mentioned in a post recently that we have reduced our hiking adventures due to the weather. We are coming up on monsoon season and the weather always becomes very hot and humid several weeks before the clouds arrive en mass.
