Sydney’s Scary River (mis)Adventure
Sydney got swept away in a river recently and it was very scary. Here’s the story:
We are back!
It has been a year since my last post where I listed out the huge life moves we had made since our previous post. We started building our house in summer of 2015, worked nearly all nights and weekends and finally received our Certificate of Occupancy at the beginning of August 2016.
Nervous Dog Behavior – Avoidance & Collar Anxiety
Nervous dog behavior can take many forms. Once you identify what is the trigger, you can begin training your dog to deal with their anxiety.
Rescue dog finally adopted by Trooper
During the first few weeks with Sydney, we were very cautious about leaving her alone with Trooper. They were hesitant and nervous about each other and were frequently in some hot debate over something.
Understand the breed, but know your dog
Aussies are known for their intelligence and connection to their owners (hence the nickname, “Velcro dog”). While working with this breed, you wouldn’t be surprised if they learned a new trick in 2 minutes or less, if they created a permanent association between two objects (i.e. running pants and time to go for a run), if they ran quickly in circles or if they followed you from room to room with a relaxed grin on their face, happy to be your shadow.
Sydney adjusts to her new home
I cannot imagine what it would feel like to give up your beloved pet. I guess the part of Sydney’s story that makes it less sad is that her owners knew (or hoped) that she was going somewhere that was better for her. Witnessing her owners say goodbye was difficult and made me very grateful for the relationship I have with Trooper.
The rest of the adoption process and finding Sydney
After verifying my references, the adoption coordinator from the Aussie rescue organization and I planned a phone interview so that they could pre-screen me prior to sending a volunteer to my house. At the time I thought the process seemed a tad intensive, but I can understand why they do it.
